Practical advice from our team in Tórshavn, for before and during your stay.
01
Seasons
Summer brings long, light evenings, the most visitors and the best months for hiking and seeing puffins. Autumn and winter have dark evenings, dramatic storms and a chance of northern lights on clear nights. Spring is quiet, with lambs in the fields and longer days every week.
02
Weather and clothing
The weather changes quickly, often several times a day, and it is rarely very cold or very warm. Bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers and good shoes in every season, and check the forecast before you set out on a hike.
03
Getting around
A car gives you the most freedom. The main islands are linked by roads, bridges and sub-sea tunnels, and some tunnels charge a toll, so ask your car rental how it is paid. Ferries and helicopters serve the smaller islands, and buses connect the larger villages.
04
Hiking
Many popular trails cross private farmland, and some charge a fee or require a guide. Stay on marked paths, keep well back from cliff edges and leave gates as you found them. Fog can roll in within minutes.
05
Food and shopping
Supermarkets are in Tórshavn and the larger villages. Small villages often have no shop, so buy groceries before you drive out. Wine, spirits and strong beer are sold only in the state shops, Rúsdrekkasøla Landsins, which have shorter opening hours.
06
Money and practical
The currency is the Faroese króna, equal in value to the Danish krone. Danish kroner and payment cards are accepted almost everywhere. In an emergency, call 112.
